Let us take you to a place where membership is a smiling face...

Volunteer

There's more than 400 years of history at Landguard Fort and the fort you see today has been lovingly repaired, restored and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers and we are always keen to welcome new members.

Join us as a volunteer and help keep it alive for future generations to experience, learn from and enjoy.

There are plenty of things to do to keep the fort running smoothly and whether you fancy helping out for a few hours a week or a few days a week we would love to hear from you.

Whatever your age, gender, background or skills, you'll get so much out of volunteering at Landguard Fort. Perhaps finding new ways of using existing skills. Or developing new ones. You can put in the hours that suit you to fit in with your life.

You'll have the opportunity for:

  • work experience to add to your CV
  • health and safety training and certification
  • first aid training
  • free uniform and personal protective equipment
  • travel expenses reimbursed.

You can:

  • get experience in trade skills, retail work, project management, historical research, tour guiding and much else besides
  • come up with new ideas and work with others to get them done.

Whatever you want to do, we'll help you do it.

Here's what a few of our current volunteers have to say ....

Heidi, who spends much of her time greeting people at the ticket office, says "As a long-time resident of Felixstowe I'd always wanted to give back to the community. I love meeting people of all ages. And volunteering in the ticket office allows me to meet people and increase awareness of the fort and all it has to offer. I love the family atmosphere with the other volunteers".

Chris is one of our tour guides and says "I've always been fascinated by history and being a tour guide lets me share it with others. It's great when a group I've taken round has thoroughly enjoyed their time and learnt something about the extraordinary stories of the fort. I always aim to excite young people with hands-on experience of history rather than artificial simulations. By making it real, I hope to stimulate their curiosity and understand how we got to the world we live in now".

Steve is one of the maintenance team and says "Looking for a suitable volunteering opportunity in the community I gave the fort a go on the maintenance side. From day one I was made to feel very welcome. What a great bunch of people! This is such a rewarding environment to work in and everyone is so friendly. Being able to play a small part in the upkeep of such an historic building gives me a great sense of pleasure and achievement".
