LANDGUARD
FORT.
Landguard Fort occupies a commanding position south of Felixstowe at the end of the promontory at the combined mouth of the rivers Stour and Orwell, guarding the approach to Harwich harbours, the Shotley Peninsular and the Port of Ipswich. The first fortifcations, built by Henry VIII (1540) took the form of two blockhouses and were constructed to meet the threat of two potential enemies, the Holy Roman Emperor and the King of France.
It was totally rebuilt in 1626-28 and played a significant part in the wars against the Dutch in 1667, who landed on the Felixstowe beaches in order to take and occupy the Fort. They were defeated.
The two main building periods that now exist are the rebuild of 1720 and the great remodelling of 1875. The Fort is in the shape of an irregular pentagon with bastions at the angles, and is surrounded by a dry ditch. In 1871 the south tower was removed and on the lines of an adjacent curtain wall a casemated battery for seven guns was built.
Guided tours of the interior of the Fort will be available on Sundays and Bank holidays during 1998 on the following dates. (Other dates by arrangement directly with the Trust.)
